Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $231,000)

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Investigative Services Division, Criminalistics Bureau, Forensic Laboratory, Seized Drug Unit is requesting Coverdell funds to purchase a Gas Chromatograph-Infrared Spectrometer (GC-IR) instrument to analyze backlog opioid cases. Currently, there are not enough instruments capable of providing conclusive analysis for all of the personnel working in the Seized Drug Unit leading to multiple users on an instrument, increasing the time it takes to perform analysis and reducing efficiency. A GC-IR will improve efficiency by increasing the number of instruments available in the laboratory and expand the technological capabilities of the Seized Drug Unit. The objectives of this proposal are: 1) to purchase a new GC-IR instrument; 2) to install and receive training on the new instrument; 3) to develop and validate methods for the new instrument; and 4) to use the validated instrument to perform seized drug analysis on suspected opioid submissions. This instrument will provide increased efficiency throughout the laboratory and expand LVMPD’s technological capabilities. CA/NCF
