Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $1,000,000)
The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is excited to expand the scope of Reentry Services through the work of the reentry initiative in early 2021. This program is being funded 50/50 by a federal Second Chance Act grant and the county’s public safety millage. It represents a pivotal opportunity to move beyond simple resource-sharing reentry. By expanding Reentry Services, the team will move forward to promoting the long-term outcomes of people who have had contact with the jail by addressing their foundational needs with longer term support. The three main components of the overall program are: better jail-based programming, better case management for people during transition and while in the community, and housing. All people booked into the jail will be screened for potential eligibility, as determined by more in-depth assessments for mental health, substance use disorder, housing security, and recidivism. The program will serve at least 150 people over the course of three years of implementation. All participants will receive case management and half will participate in the housing program.
