Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $321,642)

San Diego's Crime Laboratory serves the San Diego Police Department. It is the lab's goal to utilize grant funds to build upon the efficiencies created previously, and continue to have high case productivity, while absorbing sexual assault kits, and decreasing turnaround times. The lab will achieve this with a combination of overtime funding, support staff funding, new technology, and additional training for our analysts. Expected results: 1) Reduce the average turnaround time on DNA cases to below 50 days; 2) Increase the average number of samples analyzed per analyst per month to 50; 3) Reduce the backlog by approximately 10%, while absorbing historical sexual assault kits, in part by completing cases in-house using grant funded overtime; 4) provide training to all analysts in the DNA laboratory; 5) update our STRMix licenses to benefit from software advances that lead to increased efficiency in overall case productivity; 6) purchase two real-time PCR instruments that will reduce the current quantitation run time by an hour.
