Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $1,607,745)

The Houston Forensic Science Center (HFSC) is a uniquely independent forensic science laboratory operation that operates seven disciplines in the City of Houston. HFSC provides forensic science services to one of the largest police departments in the State of Texas, the Houston Police Department, as well as a growing number of other stakeholders in the region. HFSC is challenged to meet customer demand for DNA services and must continuously seek opportunities to streamline laboratory operations, alleviate bottlenecks in the testing process, and increase casework throughput. HFSC requests FY 2019 DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction Program (CEBR) funds to support an overall goal of enhancing laboratory efficiency and capacity. Specifically, funds will be used for staffing, in-house training, continuing education, software upgrades and renewals, instrumentation, laboratory flooring and work surface improvements, and outsourcing.
