Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $611,967)

The City of Albuquerque operates both the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) forensic DNA Laboratory and the New Mexico DNA Identification System (NMDIS) Administrative Center, the legislatively designated SDIS laboratory for the State of New Mexico. The APD and NMDIS are requesting funding to purchase supplemental DNA testing supplies, contract personnel to do support tasks in the DNA unit, and an outsourcing contract for database samples; the funding is also requested to support travel and registration to scientific conferences to comply with continuing education requirements. The intent of this project is to assure that both the APD’s and NMDIS’s labs are able to increase their respective capacities for analysis, reduce any applicable backlogs, and reduce their reporting and match confirmation turnaround times.
