Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $406,907)
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) Forensic Laboratory Bureau (FLB) is seeking federal funding from the FY 2019 DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program for its NMDPS FY19 Forensic DNA Backlog Reduction Project that will improve the quality and timeliness of statewide forensic science services. The NMDPS FY19 Forensic DNA Backlog Reduction Project enables the FLB to continue its efforts to improve its current DNA average case turnaround time of 106 days down to an optimal 100 days of less. The project FLB proposes will: 1) provide overtime funds and supplies for forensic scientists to conduct DNA analysis; 2) provide funding to attend external trainings to meet continuing education requirements for FBI Quality Assurance Standards (QAS), provide in house training on new methods, procedures, and technology; 3) and provide new and modernized equipment and other supply items to the laboratories that need to replace outdated items.
