Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $537,487)

The Phoenix Police Department (PPD) Laboratory Services Bureau (LSB) is responsible for the analysis of evidentiary material associated with criminal investigations within the city limits of Phoenix, Arizona. The Federal funding from this award will be used for the following goals: 1) funding the salaries for one laboratory technician and two forensic scientists for 15 months; 2) administratively close 50 invalid laboratory requests to focus on other cases to reduce turnaround times; 3) outsource DNA cases; 4) improve internal DNA analysis processes by supporting continuing education; 5) upgrade the CODIS server and software and purchase one backup power supply; 6) aid DNA mixture interpretation and statistical comparisons by purchasing four ArmedXpert, four STRmix v2.6, and four GMIDX v1.6 Client.
