Case Backlog Reduction Project

The Scientific Investigation Section (SIS) of the Honolulu Police Department is responsible for analyzing evidence associated with criminal investigations for the City and County of Honolulu and processes cases for local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in Hawaii. The demand for DNA services has strained the laboratory’s budget and funding is needed to meet both immediate needs and long-term capacity building. Funding from this award will be used to hire additional staff and purchase DNA testing supplies to analyze cases . A contractor will be hired to assess the laboratory and office space to accommodate new personnel. The funding will also support continuing education opportunities, and equipment and validation support will assist with long-term capacity building.
