The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office (VCMEO) provides medicolegal death investigation for a population of approximately 860,000 people. As only one of five medical examiner offices within the entire state of California, the VCMEO is seeking NAME accreditation to further raise the standard of medicolegal death investigation within the state. The office has already made strides toward accreditation including ABMDI certification of investigators, a Lodox X-ray scanner, web-based investigation software (MDILog) and toxicology testing through NMS labs. The goal of this project is to address facility deficiencies which stand in the way of successful accreditation. The VCMEO aims to serve as an example to other counties by achieving the recommended standards of NAME accreditation and ultimately protecting public interest and gaining trust through sound independent death investigation using best scientific practices.
