Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2020, $996,679)

The purpose of the FY 2020 Innovations in Reentry Initiative (IRI): Building System Capacity and Testing Reentry Strategies program is to help jurisdictions assess their reentry system, identify strengths and gaps, and then implement improvements to enhance the effectiveness of their reentry system or to implement or enhance a reentry program to reduce recidivism.

The Kansas Department of Corrections (DOC) will use funds to improve reentry services, particularly among those who are placed in restrictive housing. The DOC will conduct a thorough assessment of the state reentry system to identify and address gaps in services, implement an Intensive Adult Reentry Program (IARP) among 150 moderate- or high-risk offenders who are placed in restrictive housing during the final months of their prison term; evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of the project through process and outcome evaluations; and ensure the sustainability of the initiative through training Kansas Department of Corrections staff members as trainers of the IARP and solidifying ongoing data collection and review strategies.
