Annotation

This training and technical assistance resource for grantees under the Bureau of Justice Assistance's (BJA's) Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) provides an overview and key considerations for jurisdictions interested in using evidence tracking systems (ETSs) for sexual assault kit (SAK) evidence.

Abstract

Such training is needed, because most U.S. law enforcement agencies do not currently have computerized systems that track SAK evidence within their agencies from the point of SAK collection through adjudication. The proposed ETS enables jurisdictions to record, catalog, and track evidence as a case proceeds through the criminal justice system, encompassing investigations and prosecutions. The ETS collects and catalogs key information on SAK evidence; tracks and audits SAKs through the chain of custody from collection through final disposition; delivers detailed reports to the appropriate entity within the prescribed time frame, and provides a descriptive list of articles or items that contain information. Technical implementation considerations discussed are system type, installation, support, and cost. Recommendations are provided for getting started on an ETS development. 6 references
