This fact sheet explains the purpose of the online Police Mental Health Collaboration Toolkit (Toolkit), which is a product of the federal Police-Mental Health Collaboration (PMHC) program.
Abstract
The Toolkit provides resources for law enforcement agencies to partner with mental health providers in responding effectively to calls for service that may involve interaction with people who have mental illness. PMHC is a law enforcement program that enables officers to respond appropriately and safely to people with mental illness. Calls that involve mental health issues are complex, time-consuming, and dangerous for law enforcement, so they require collaboration among law enforcement agencies, mental health practitioners, and other appropriate community agencies. The Toolkit guides a law enforcement agency in designing and implementing a PMHC program that is specific to the distinctive characteristics of the community being served. The Toolkit can be accessed at www.bja.gov/pmhc.
