Abstract

This brief fact sheet describes the Strengthening the Medical Examiner-Coroner System Program, which was initiated in 2017 in order to increase the number of practicing, board-certified forensic pathologists and to strengthen the quality and consistency of medical examiner-coroner (ME/C) services, ensuring equitable application of death investigation services. The fact sheet provides the following: information about the two service areas that are funded under the program; funding and award details since 2017; program accomplishments in the two purpose areas; and grantee highlights. The document also provides more information about the Bureau of Justice Assistance, which helps state, local, and tribal jurisdictions to reduce and prevent crime, lower recidivism, and promote a fair and safe criminal justice system.
