Defusing Difficult Situations

Learn about resources available from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and BJA's VALOR Officer Safety and Wellness Initiative partners related to how defusing difficult situations can increase officer safety:

Programs

  • Adaptive Defensive and Protective Tactics (ADAPT) Project: This project integrates data and research on police decision-making, use of force, officer injuries and fatalities, officer safety, human performance, physiology and kinesiology, etc., to design an updated model defensive tactics training that can be integrated into the training program of any sized agency.
  • VALOR Officer Safety and Wellness Program: This program is dedicated to preventing injuries to and deaths of law enforcement officers and the people they serve and improving the health and resilience of officers.

Surge Resources

  • Crisis to C.A.L.M. Series: This series of resources introduces the C.A.L.M. concept that officers may embrace in order to successfully resolve high-stress or difficult situations. A C.A.L.M. officer is better able to make quick, informed decisions and brings calm to a situation.
