Presidential Task Force on Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives Virtual Consultation: BIA Southwest Region

On November 26, 2019, President Trump signed Executive Order 13898, forming the Task Force on Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives. The Task Force Co-Chairs are Attorney General William P. Barr and Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhardt; the Co-Chair Designees are Katie Sullivan, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Office of Justice Programs, Department of Justice, and Tara Sweeney, Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs, Department of the Interior.

The Task Force aims to enhance the operation of the criminal justice system and address the legitimate concerns of American Indian and Alaska Native communities regarding missing and murdered people, particularly missing and murdered women and girls.

Pursuant to the Executive Order, the Task Force is conducting consultations with Tribal governments on the scope and nature of the issues regarding missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives. The consultations are organized by Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) regions, as follows:

  • Eastern
  • Midwest
  • Southern Plains and Eastern Oklahoma
  • Great Plains and Rocky Mountain
  • Southwest
  • Northwest
  • Western and Navajo
  • Pacific (2 sessions)
  • Alaska (2 sessions)
  • General Session for Tribal Leaders unable to attend their Region’s consultation

Please register for the consultation in the BIA region where your tribe is located.

Tribes, Tribal organizations, individuals, and others may submit written comments to [email protected]. Comments are due by September 30, 2020.
