The Harris County Sheriff’s Office will expand itsexisting PREA program by adding two employees and by providing counseling to inmates who have been victimized. On a typical day, the Harris County Jail houses 9,000 inmates, of whom approximately 650 are classified as LGBTQI inmates. Grant funds will be used to hire a Navigator dedicated to assisting the LGBTQI community in the jail, and a PREA Investigator to investigate claims of sexual harassment and sexual abuse in the jail. In addition, the agency will contract with a professional counselor to provide counseling to LGBTQI inmates who have been the victim of sex trafficking, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, or domestic violence. Finally, the agency will purchase needed equipment and supplies for its PREA Office.
