Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2021, $249,997)

The Kentucky Department of Corrections (KDOC) has long embraced the principles associated with the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA). At the close of calendar year 2020, the KDOC operated thirteen (13) designated adult correctional facilities. KDOC works on a continuous basis to ensure that adequate video monitoring systems are utilized at all adult facilities to enhance the agency’s ability to protect inmates from sexual abuse. This project proposes to fund a total replacement of the video monitoring system at Little Sandy Correctional Complex (last updated in 2005) through the purchase and installation of all new equipment to include: interior and exterior cameras, 360 degree cameras, updated camera licenses and mounting/monitoring equipment. A modern video monitoring system will enhance the facility's ability to protect inmates from sexual abuse by ensuring fewer blind spots, clearer images, and greater reviewing/recording capabilities. This project will also update appropriate policies and trainings to ensure implementation of this new technology ensures sexual safety.
