BJA FY 21 Strengthening the Medical Examiner-Coroner System Program

Purpose Area 2: Medical Examiner-Coroner Office Accreditation

ABSTRACT

Strengthening the Medical Examiner-Coroner System Program will provide the critical resources necessary for the Medical Examiner Office to succeed in the pursuit of achieving accreditation by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME).

From the NAME Inspection and Accreditation Checklist adopted November 2018, the Medical Examiner has identified specific products and deliverables lacking that will support this initiative.  These products include shelving, a hydraulic lift, body trays, personal air respirators (CAPRS), furniture, renovations costs, explosion proof safety cabinets, fume exhaust hood, radiation aprons, a safety shower and various fees associated with accreditation.

The District 19 service area includes four counties for a total of 678,062 residents not including the tourists that visit the area annually.

These remarkable accreditation efforts will increase the investment in surrounding communities to prevent crime and drug abuse and by ensuring fair, accurate and rapid prosecution of some of the most serious crimes.  The goal is to achieve NAME accreditation which will benefit the entire community served by providing citizens and visitors with high-caliber forensic/medicolegal death investigations.
