Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $2,010,000)
Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) seeks to increase high-visibility police patrols to reduce violence in Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) systems (Metrorail and Metromover) within Miami-Dade County via Operation Safe Ride. The goal is to deter crime from occurring on MDT platforms as well as on the trains and shuttles themselves. Direct services include enhanced police services and coverage on public transit, such as faster response times to emergency or in-progress incidents and increased citizen/police interaction, which overall will contribute to improved security for and safety of residents and visitors in the area, in response to recent spikes in crime.
MDT is 15th-largest mass transit system in the U.S. and largest in Florida, connecting Miami International Airport, downtown Miami, community hubs throughout the County, and linkages to neighboring counties and Amtrak. Operation Safe Ride will improve security at all Metrorail and Metromover stations by posting MDPD officers to deter crime from and respond to crime on platforms, trains, and shuttles, directly impacting public safety and prioritizing community violence reduction. Safe mass transportation for the community to travel to and from their jobs and for locals and tourists alike to visit restaurants, shopping districts, and area attractions will directly stimulate the economy. Operation Safe Ride is an excellent use of taxpayer funds as it directly impacts public safety of residents and visitors using Miami-Dade County’s Metrorail and Metromover systems and prioritizes community violence reduction.
