Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $686,000)

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office (EBRSO) will utilize these funds for the aquisition of a Rapid DNA System. If awarded, the EBRSO would partner with the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab to pilot a Rapid DNA program for processing reference samples and single-source crime scene evidence. Rapid DNA can generate DNA profiles within 90 minutes and then be searched in a mirrored State Criminal Investigation DNA Database. Rapid DNA provides an opportunity to impact investigations by providing investigative leads in real-time.  Rapid DNA can assist in quickly including and excluding potential suspects and avoid unnecessary arrests. EBRSOs vision would be to house the Rapid DNA System at the LSP Headquarters at the East Baton Rouge Violent Crimes Unit. This would assist in controlled access, security of the instrument, and minimize IT security issues.
