Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $46,519)
The Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, the governing body for criminal justice issues in the state, is staffed by the Kansas Governor’s Grants Program (KGGP). The Governor has designated the KGGP as the State Administering Agency for the Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant and, therefore, also for the PREA Reallocation funds. The Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) is designated as the PREA contact agency for the state.
The ultimate goal for Kansas is to create a culture of reporting and sexual safety within the correctional system through achieving full compliance with national PREA standards. The primary goal of this PREA Reallocation project is to conduct required PREA audits, pursuant to PREA Standard §115.401, to provide all residents with a PREA flyer upon intake and a comprehensive PREA brochure within 30 days of staying at the facility, and to present educational PREA videos for residents.
To achieve the goals of full compliance with national PREA standards as they relate to the Project Goal, the KDOC PREA Coordinator will oversee the completion of one KDOC agency PREA audit, the completion of three KDOC facility PREA audits; the professional printing of a PREA flyer and comprehensive PREA brochure in full color for all nine facilities across the state; and the creation of a professionally produced educational PREA video for both the adult and juvenile facilities.
