Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $285,368)

The Prince George’s County Police Department, Forensic Science Division, an ANSI National Accreditation Board accredited laboratory (F-0249), is requesting $285,368.00 under the FY 2022 DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction Program.  The purpose of this grant is to outsource DNA evidence from backlogged cases in order to reduce the current backlog of DNA cases.
The County, with a population of approximately 950,000 people, continues to see a relatively high crime rate, second only to Baltimore City in the state of Maryland.  Our need for this type of financial assistance continues due to limited staffing and resources within our Department.  The needs of investigators and prosecutors keep our demand for service high.
