Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $148,000)
Tribal Citizens residing in Craig, Alaska struggle with some of the nations highest rates of interpersonal violence, substance misuse, incarceration, recidivism and many other maladaptive behaviors stemming from complex historical trauma. Through the current Justice Systems, these behaviors are dealt with in a punitive versus restorative manner. This way of meting out justice is not curbing the incidents of these behaviors, and not bringing wellness to the victims/survivors, their families or the community.
Through a Comprehensive Strategic Plan and Community Needs Assessment, the Craig Tribal Association can identify the problems and the partners to collaborate with to bring a Tribal Justice System that would include restorative justice approach. This project will collect essential data needed to create a roadmap to develop a viable and sustainable Tribal Justice System for the residents of Craig, Alaska and the wider Prince of Wales catchment area.
