Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $583,000)

Evidence is a key aspect of the criminal justice system requiring secure and well-functioning storage. The City of Washington proposes to provide for police evidence by designing and constructing a new facility for Washington, IL Police Evidence Storage. The purpose is to provide for police evidence by designing and constructing a facility for storage of evidence and recovered property in the care of the Washington, IL Police Department.

The facility will allow the police department to properly execute collection, storage, preservation, retrieval and disposal methods to improve the function of the criminal justice system within the statutes and laws in Illinois. This includes evidence from local law enforcement, multi-agency and jurisdictional investigations, investigations of sex crimes or other crimes involving DNA or other biological evidence, and cybercrimes in a safe, secure and climate controlled environment. It is critical that the integrity of evidence is protected to improve the functioning of the criminal justice system.

Expected outcomes include the proper security, safety and viability of evidence which is critically important to the prosecution and defense of crimes. Beneficiaries include but are not limited to crime victims, regional law enforcement officers, Illinois State’s Attorney’s Office, the legal system of Tazewell County and the state of Illinois, and our Federal partners.
