Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $250,000)

With the influx of offenders placed on community control and/ or released from prison back into the community, we need to ensure they are prepared to be integrated or re-integrated back into society. The offender will need to know how to obtain and retain employment by improving and increasing their skill level to make them employable so they can improve and sustain their personal financial situation to avoid recidivism. They will also need assistance with transitional housing, obtain valid driver’s license, high school equivalency assistance, apprentice programs, healthcare assistance, professional counseling needs. etc. By offering the above, the goal is a reduction in recidivism. The anticipated benefits are, but certainly not limited to, breaking the cycle of negative behavior, thinking errors, by the offender and to empower him/ her. It will also enhance their education level as adult residents of the 13th Congressional District. Additional goals of the program is to provide social skills and cognitive behavioral intervention programming to prepare them for adverse situations. Such programs as thinking for a change, anger management and homework assignments offered through the Carey guides.
