Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $43,000)

In 2022, the Stratham Police Department received SRTBWC funding for the purchase and implementation of a Body Worn Camera (BWC) program. In conjunction with the BWC program, the Stratham Police Department is seeking funding for Dash Board Cameras (DBCs) for inside of police vehicles.

DBC’s and BWC’s can document interactions with victims, witnesses, and others during police/citizen encounters, at crime and incident scenes, and during traffic stops. In many instances police agencies have found these camera systems useful for officers in the favorable resolution of both administrative and criminal complaints, and as a defense resource in cases of civil liability. Officers using these recorders have a clearly documented, firsthand and completely objective account of what actions occurred, and what was said during any incident in question.

These cameras would be beneficial not only to the Town of Stratham, but also to surrounding agencies. The Stratham Police Department often provides mutual aid to surrounding jurisdictions. During these interactions, the officers would continue to use their cameras for documenting the interactions. Some of the surrounding jurisdictions do not, yet, have their own BWC or DBC program. For those departments, footage captured on the cameras of SPD officers would be beneficial. The cameras not only benefit the Town of Stratham. They're a benefit to every citizen that the department interacts with and also any agency that requests assistance from SPD.
