Fostering Greater Gun Safety in the New Haven Area

The NGSC is the only organized effort that brings gun violence prevention advocates together with LE to test and evaluate gun safety technologies. Launched in 2020, we have 20 Law Enforcement (LE) agencies across multiple states currently testing products. Funding comes from fees paid by LE depts, which cover costs of products, shipping, and a portion of staffing. The evaluations build user confidence in these life-saving products and, in turn, provide valuable feedback from LE experts to the developers/entrepreneurs.

We are requesting $67,000.00 to fund participation of more Connecticut Law Enforcement agencies in testing and evaluating gun security products. Currently, Hamden, Bridgeport and New Haven are the only LE agencies actively engaged in this work. Through this funding, we can strengthen this work in Connecticut by increasing participation of LE agencies who have expressed interest but simply don’t have the funding to join.

A problem as vast and complex as gun-related violence demands multiple approaches. As we engage more and more law enforcement agencies across the U.S. in testing and evaluating the latest gun safety tools, we will build market demand and encourage the entrepreneurial sector that produces them. Let’s move this forward together in Connecticut where we already have safe storage laws in place that link directly to the market need for these products. Together, we will pave the way for comprehensive change in Connecticut and throughout the United States.
