Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $66,458)

The Strengthening the Medical Examiner-Coroner System Program will provide the resources necessary for the newly accredited Medical Examiner Office to maintain office accreditation by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME). The Office of the Medical Examiner, District 19 service area, includes four counties for a total of 716,305 residents not including the tourists that visit the area annually. 

The goal of this project is to maintain the Medical Examiner's Office accreditation by NAME, which in return will benefit the entire community served by providing citizens and visitors with a level of excellence that comes with accreditation, and high-caliber forensic/medicolegal death investigations. Per the NAME Inspection and Accreditation Checklist adopted November 2018, the Medical Examiner has identified several areas where maintenance will be crucial for the office to maintain accreditation. Equipment such as an additional office vehicle,  2-way radios, tablets for investigators in the field, a copier/fax/scan machine, the annual replacement of HEPA Filters and various annual renewal fees such as NAME reaccreditation, investigators renewal of American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation (ABMDI) certification, case management subscription renewal fees,  Information Technology fees  to design and maintain an office website, and utilizing a private contractor for locums tenens to help keep autopsy numbers per doctor within NAME guidelines, have all been identified.
