Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $754,325)
The 2023 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement grant application is focused on funding thirteen (13) agencies that will work to ensure quality and efficient processing of forensic services to criminal justice professionals. Illicit drug abuse continues; testing and identification of controlled substances places a strain on state and local crime laboratories, medical examiner offices, and coroner’s offices.
Some key goals for this proposal are employing qualified personnel to assist in the reduction/elimination of backlog in the areas of analysis of forensic science evidence; obtaining critical and up-to-date information available on forensic analysis through professional conferences, instrument manufacturers, training and networking; and procuring technology and supplies that will maintain or enhance laboratory accreditation, quality assurance and analytical ability to maintain the standards of ASCLD laboratory accreditation.
The 2023 Paul Coverdell funding will help address the growing needs of these agencies. Forensic science is an ever-evolving field and the demand for testing continually increases, requiring the need for trained staff vital. Continued training will enhance analysts with current trend knowledge and enable them to employ the most current techniques, information, and protocols when conducting forensic examinations and analyses. This funding will help improve the timeliness and quality of forensic analyses and examinations of evidence.
