The Phoenix Police Department Laboratory Services Bureau (PPD-LSB)’s Forensic Biology (FB) Section, which includes the Forensic DNA and Evidence Screening Sections, is responsible for the DNA analysis of biological evidence. The purpose of this project is to improve forensic DNA operations by increasing the analytical capacity and decreasing the number of backlogged cases in service to the citizens of Phoenix.
The FY 2023 Formula DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program funds will be used for the following goals:
Increase the number of eligible CODIS samples developed by providing overtime for PPD-LSB scientists to process 15 backlogged forensic biology cases on overtime and to outsource 175 backlogged forensic biology cases.
Increase the capacity of the PPD-LSB FB Section by purchasing, validating and implementing a new quantitation instrument (QuantStudio 5), purchasing a new plate setup instrument (QIAgility), and purchasing alternative light source equipment for the detection of possible biological fluids suitable for DNA analysis. Additional equipment and supplies will be purchased for use during the processing of items for DNA such as: thermal mixers, lab chairs, pipettes, vortex mixers and centrifuges.
Provide continuing education training to approximately 11 scientists in the FB Section.
