Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $1,764,997)

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Forensic Science Division (FSD) is a full-service accredited crime laboratory that serves approximately 4 million residents in the City of Los Angeles.  LAPD FSD proposes to increase the efficiency and capacity of the analysis of evidence in the Serology/DNA Unit (SDU) using the FY 2023 DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction Program.

Project activities to increase sample processing include purchasing of supplies, validating a new high-throughput instrument and implementing new software to track sample analysis and reporting.  To increase capacity and reduce case backlog, the program will increase personnel hours for forensic DNA sample analysis and train additional staff.  During the grant performance period, the LAPD SDU expects to process more CODIS eligible samples in less time, allowing staff sufficient time to train personnel and validate new technologies.  In addition, grant funding will allow staff to receive training to meet required continuing education requirements of accreditation.
