Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $250,000)

The York County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Biology Laboratory is a local forensic laboratory that is part of the York County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) and funded by York County in South Carolina. York County is comprised of seven agencies which all may use the services of the laboratory. The York County Sheriff’s Office requests funding from the FY 2023 DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program to increase the capacity of the Forensic Biology laboratory to process more DNA samples for entry into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), thereby helping to reduce the number of forensic DNA samples awaiting analysis and prevent a backlog of forensic samples. Funding from this grant will be used to integrate a quality assurance module into the existing LIMS. In addition, funds will be used to offer required annual training, maintain accreditation, and provide maintenance coverage for instrumentation. The outcomes of this award will support meeting accreditation requirements, meeting the FBI’s Quality Assurance Standards (QAS), and maintain capacity enhancing equipment.
