Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $188,925)

In 2020 the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) was able to complete a limited deployment of BWCs to full-time uniform patrol officers and first- and second-line supervisors on three of its seven campuses and one of its two regional centers. These BWCs have proven to be highly effective at improving criminal justice outcomes, enhancing citizen and officer safety, promoting civil liberties, and increasing community trust through transparency. The IUPD will purchase and deploy additional BWCs so that all full- and part-time officers on all seven campus and both regional centers can be equipped with them. The IUPD has recently been reviewing its policy governing BWCs to ensure that it meets national best practices and is engaging with internal and external stakeholders to secure the highest levels of support possible for BWCs. The
IUPD will engage with the community to educate them about BWCs, seek input on the IUPD BWC
program, and address any concerns they may have regarding BWCs. The IUPD will actively monitor the progress of its BWC program and produce deliverables to demonstrate that the stated goals and objectives are being met. The IUPD is confident these additional BWCs will be a tremendous asset to officers and the communities they serve.
