Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $20,000)

Northport Police Department (NPD) located in Northport, Alabama seeks to expand its Body Worn
Camera Program. The purpose is to equip all sixty officers with body worn cameras (BWCs) to
enhance protection of both themselves and the community they serve. Currently, fifty of the sixty
officers are equipped with BWCs. Equipping the entire police force will further NPD’s mission to
increase equitable justice for all community members and strengthens community safety while also
contributing to a higher level of trust between the community and NPD. Project activities include
following federal procurement guidelines for the BWCs and supplemental equipment such as docking
stations, instructor certified in-house training to officers on proper usage and protocol of BWCs,
deployment of BWCs into the field, community and criminal justice stakeholder engagement and
education, and strengthening of NPD’s current BWC implementation plan. Expected outcomes include
a robust BWC implementation and training plan, increased access to justice for all community
members regardless of race and social status, increased community and police officer safety, and
improved trust between NPD and the community. Implementation of these additional BWCs will
benefit individuals across NPD’s service area which includes the Northport city limits and the police
jurisdiction.
