Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $4,600,513)

The Arizona Criminal Justice Commission is a statutorily authorized entity mandated to carry out various coordinating, monitoring, and reporting functions regarding the administration and management of criminal justice programs in Arizona. As the state-administering agency for the Byrne/JAG program, the Commission distributes these funds via competitive grants to state, tribal, county, and local government agencies to support the Drug, Gang, and Violent Crime Control (DGVCC) program. The 2020-2025 Drug, Gang, and Violent Crime Control State Strategy is the Commission’s primary decision-making tool for allocating funds and guiding project activity for the DGVCC program.

The project's goals in accordance with the Strategy are to curtail the flow of illicit drugs, drug proceeds, and instruments used to perpetuate violence across Arizona, reduce violent crime and illicit drug use, and deter repeat offenders in Arizona.  In response to drug, gang, and violent crime in Arizona, the following seven purpose areas have been identified as potential funding areas for the 2020-2025 time period:

Forensic Support Services

Adjudication and Sentencing

Corrections and Community Corrections

Substance Abuse Treatment for Corrections-Involved Individuals

Prevention and Education

In addition to the seven purpose areas, a list of strategic principles has been developed based on a thorough analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of the DGVCC program.  The Commission's criteria for establishing funding priorities are the seven purpose areas and strategic principles.  The top ten project identifiers associated with proposed project activities include the following: Task Forces, Prosecution, Asset Forfeiture, Forensic Science, Adjudication, Gangs, Drugs, Fraud, Drug Courts, and Policing.
