Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $10,875)

Gun related violence has caused citizens of Brawley to live in a lasting state of apprehension and the Brawley Police Department is committed to finding a way to protect and serve our community for a brighter future. Shootings, armed robberies, violent attacks in broad daylight, illegal possession of pistols and automatic rifles, kidnappings and graffiti in our city have been so severe that we have been working closely with federal and allied law enforcement agencies in an effort to reduce gun violence. Violence involving guns in our city have become so common that out of state news channels have visited the City of Brawley to report on these senseless acts of violence.

In May of 2022, a fourteen-year-old student shot a sixteen-year-old student afterschool following a physical altercation near the school campus. This is a small sample of the senseless violence that is plaguing our city and the Brawley Police Department is humbly requesting funding for the purchase of equipment we can leverage to effectively combat violence involving firearms. The Brawley Police Department will focus our limited enforcement resources on efforts that will have the most significant impact on gun violence that is often at the core of other problems plaguing our city.

The Brawley Police Department will focus all grant funding in the purchase of ballistic helmets that will be used by our Officers and Detectives who will focus their efforts on a directed patrol operation which prioritizes the addressing of gun and gang violence at the street level. This directed patrol operation approach may not result in an increase in the raw number of arrests, or convictions, but it will improve public safety consistent with our values which is the true measure of success. In an effort to keep our community safe, the use of ballistic helmets can quickly mitigate a deadly encounter by providing our first responders with a barrier of protection.

The Brawley Police Department has seen a spike in the criminal use of firearms in our city and we are humbly requesting funding to purchase ballistic helmets to we can effectively mitigate these rapidly evolving situations. By incorporating the use of ballistic helmets in our proposed strategy, the Brawley Police Department will be able to address gun violence by offering our first responders with much needed equipment that will help neutralize threats quickly and safely. Ballistic helmets are valuable tool that can go a long way in helping keep our Officers and communities safe. It is our expectation these efforts will improve public safety and reduce gun violence.
