Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $61,794)

The city of Homestead, FL will utilize 2023 JAG grant funds for law enforcement overtime for increased crime investigations in order to reduce the high rate of crime within the city. The police department will utilize crime data that is collected and analyzed on a weekly basis. This data determines the type of crime that is occurring, the location of the crime and any changes in crime patterns/trends. This allows the police command staff to develop a data driven response to the criminal element (hot spot policing). The department works closely with the U.S. Attorney's office, Southern District of Florida and the Florida State Attorney's office when addressing crime within the city, (such as crimes committed with a firearm). The department also has a gun violence initiative that works in collaboration with the JAG funded details (sharing of information/data).

Through the 2023 JAG funding, the city will purchase 113 "Stop the Bleed" kits in order to provide every officers with the tools needed in order to conduct life saving measures when responding to "shots fired" in which a wounded victim has been identified, prior to the arrival of paramedics. Due to the police departments use of gun fire technology, officers are often dispatched to an area in which gun fire has occurred, with a response time of under 3 minutes. Upon encountering a wounded victim, the use of "Stop the Bleed" kits will enable the officer to render lifesaving aid while awaiting the arrival of paramedics.
