Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $119,429)

The primary mission of the Savannah Police Departments Bomb Unit is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the members of the City's diverse communities as well as the safety of all public safety personnel who may be first responders to an explosive-related incident.  The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is responsible for rendering safe suspicious packages, assisting military Explosive Ordnance Device (EOD) units with the destruction of explosive ordnance, and assisting SWAT with barricaded gunman calls.

Currently our bomb suit is expired and needs to be replaced for the Savannah Police Department to meet the mission and goals of the unit.  Our goal is to purchase two bomb suits for the unit.

The Underwater Search and Recovery Team is an auxiliary unit to Savannah Police Department and often assists local and federal law enforcement agencies. The mission of the Underwater Search and Recovery Team is to respond to water-related incidents, such as drowning, underwater search and recovery of stolen property or other criminal evidence, conduct underwater Sweeps for VIP protection and/or high-risk targets. The Team also performs ship hull searches for contraband/parasitic devices when requested. All missions are documented for the purpose of court testimony.

A dive team must have and maintain proper equipment for the missions in which the team may choose to participate.  The proposed request for equipment will help maintain the mission and goals for the Savannah Police Departments Dive team.  The unit’s equipment is old and needs to be replaced to meet the mission and goals of the Savannah Police Department.  Our goal is to equip the dive team with the necessary equipment needed.

Garden City Department is included each year with Savannah Police Departments request for new equipment. Traffic safety is a top priority for Garden City.  They have seen a rise in traffic accidents over the last three years.  They worked 447 accidents in 2020, 517 accidents in 2021, and 608 accidents in 2022.  Traffic enforcement technology and equipment is needed.  Our agency has an immediate need for LIDAR (laser) traffic enforcement equipment.  They have several officers who are certified in LIDAR use.  Our goal is to equip the traffic unit officers and each patrol unit shift with new LIDARs.
