Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $999,750)
South Whittier School District will take a preventative approach to stopping and reducing school violence. Project implementation would include implementation of an anonymous tip hotline system and staff threat assessment training, as well as creating a behavior response team consisting of trained behavioral health staff to address and neutralize threatening behaviors and work collaboratively with at-risk students to create a plan for replacing disruptive behaviors with more positive ones. In addition, the proposal would include implementing evidence-based zones of regulation SEL curriculum in all K–8 grades to help students with problem-solving, coping skills, and self-regulation and anger management. The objectives of the South Whittier STOP School Violence proposal would be to reduce disciplinary incidents, suspensions, and expulsions of vulnerable, at-risk students; improve very high rates of chronic absenteeism; and improve the overall school climate and learning environment for all students.
