Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $150,000)

The Galena Village (aka Louden Village) is a federally recognized tribe located in Galena, Alaska, with a tribal enrollment of approximately 1,000 members; 320 of Galena’s tribal members live in the City of Galena, which is about 65 percent of the community. Galena Village is working to increase focus on youth because our local youth have been struggling with substance abuse challenges and poor mental health. To complete a comprehensive justice plan, Galena Village will host/organize a series of interagency meetings in Galena to collaboratively design our Justice Systems Action Plan with the support of a DOJ technical assistance representative. We will complete a justice needs assessment and gather data to support decision-making. The completed Justice System Action Plan will serve as a roadmap for justice programming in Galena. Areas of both weakness and strength will be indicated in the needs assessment to support change processes. Safety and well-being will be enhanced in Galena because of shared vision and collaborative decision making. Ultimately, Galena’s community policing efforts via planning can serve as a model for other rural communities in Alaska. To fund this effort, we are requesting $128,869 from BJA to complete a planning process over a 24-month period.
