Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $950,000)

The Native Village of Paimiut is a federally recognized and displaced tribe on the Southwestern Bering Sea Coast. The Native Village of Paimiut is becoming a regional leader and innovator in Alaska on tribal justice and technical assistance for other tribes, tribal courts, and interagency agreements and partnerships. The shortage of law enforcement and public safety staff has become endemic in rural Alaska and needs addressing. Partnerships like ours will become the norm. In addition, we feel that all federal agencies should look to innovative community-based, intertribal and interagency solutions like ours. The Native Village of Paimiut is applying for funding on behalf of the tribe as well as its partner in law enforcement, the City of Hooper Bay Village Police Officer Program. Grant funds will be used to expand and facilitate additional programs, services, and training, and child and family counseling will to ensure we can meet tribal justice and public safety priorities within the shared community of Hooper Bay.
