Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $639,021)

The Prairie Island Indian Community (PIIC) is a federally recognized tribe located in Goodhue County, MN. PIIC population is approximately 1,200, spread out over several areas including the tribal reservation, the City of Red, and the City of Hastings, as well as other surrounding cities. We also have a transient population of over 3 million tourists that visit our community annually, with seasonal peaks in the Spring and Summer months. With this funding, The PIIC Peacemaker Program 2023 project will enhance the Tribal Court’s capacity to address tribal member disputes through a community-based alternative approach to dispute resolution in the Tribal Community. By the end of the project, we will have developed an alternative court for dispute resolution called the “Peacemaker Court” to serve the tribal community.
