Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $24,234)
The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians is a federally recognized Tribe located in Belcourt, Rolette County, North Dakota. Turtle Mountain Tribal Law Enforcement strives to provide all tribal citizens with a safe community through effective law enforcement, and community education and policing. High rates of homelessness, poverty, unemployment, alcohol and substance abuse, and violent crime continue to elevate law enforcement calls for service and put a tremendous burden on our law enforcement agency. Despite these obstacles, the Tribe is determined to create a safer community by improving law enforcement practices and safety during officer interactions with public.
The goal of the Turtle Mountain Tribe is to ensure a safer community for all tribal members by enhancing our law enforcement's capacity to prevent, solve, and control crime. The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa request JAG funds to provide body worn cameras for our Tribal Law Enforcement officers.
JAG funding will help ensure that the Turtle Mountain Tribe achieves the goals of strengthening police accountability, preventing confrontational situations, resolving officer-involved incidents and complaints, improving agency transparency, identifying and correcting internal agency problems, strengthening officer performance, and improving evidence documentation for investigations and prosecutions.
In order to achieve our goals and objectives the Tribe respectfully request BJA FY23 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program Local Solicitation Funding for body worn cameras.
