Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $1,231,000)

The Belt-worn Trauma Kit provided to the uniform members of service contains lifesaving equipment that can be used for pre-hospital treatment of numerous types of injuries. Immediate, effective treatment of the leading causes of preventable death (extremity hemorrhage, tension pneumothorax, and obstructed airway) can significantly increase the number of lives saved, including law enforcement, first responder and civilians alike. With the increase in active shooter incidents and vehicle ramming attacks, the likelihood of NYPD officers coming across civilians with these life-threatening injuries or sustaining these injuries themselves is increased greatly. The risk of not having this life saving equipment is the loss of lives, both civilian and law enforcement, from injuries that, if treated in the field, are survivable.  The NYPD has developed a program for uniform members of service to be trained in and carry a tourniquet, combat gauze and a pressure dressing on their person for use on another in need of such first aid.
