Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $963,000)

The “Crime Reduction through Comprehensive Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Prevention and Treatment Initiative” is founded on the belief that reducing the number of people suffering from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is an effective method of crime prevention. Treatment, prevention, and education are the key components of our proposal—together, they form the pillars of Beit T’Shuvah’s crime-reduction strategy, and will guide the trajectory of our project over the next 12 months.

Funding will subsidize the cost of treatment for our justice-involved clients, effectively increasing our capacity to provide recovery services for this underserved population, and ultimately reducing recidivism. Additionally, funding will allow for the expansion of Partners in Prevention (PIP), our scalable prevention program. PIP utilizes the same principles we rely on in our recovery program, and makes them accessible to middle and high school students as tools for facilitating a structured process of self-exploration to help them avoid the dangerous pitfalls of drug addiction and crime. This project will also enable Freedom Song, a transformative and original musical that has been an important part of our prevention programing for many years, to reach a wider audience. Finally, funding will facilitate an expansion of opportunities focused on providing biological, psychological, spiritual and social training in the understanding and treatment of addictive disorders offered to community professionals including clergy, attorneys, elected officials, clinicians, and healthcare professionals in the Los Angeles area.

When effectively implemented, this important project will not only positively affect the individuals who are suffering from addiction, but will help to safeguard personal and public property, increase employment, educate youth and community professionals, and protect human life.
