Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $1,500,000)

The purpose of the Reno Police Department (RPD) Wellness Program is to create a healthy and resilient law enforcement workforce able to meet the challenges of modern policing in a growing community.  Law enforcement is inherently dangerous.  In addition to the obvious risk of physical injury due to violence, motor vehicle accidents, and environmental exposure, law enforcement personnel are exposed to a myriad of less obvious hazards.  These include the physical and emotional toll of stress, exposure to both primary and secondary trauma, shift work, and unique demands of a given work assignment.

RPD proposes to foster the health and wellness of its workforce in the face of these challenges with three major strategies: 1) a rigorous wellness education program for law enforcement personnel and their families, 2) the equipping of a new public safety center to support the physical health of its employees, 3) occupational health screening and physical therapy supports.  The primary beneficiaries are the 452 members of the Police Department.
