Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $84,000)

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the failing economy, the Nicholas County Commission has been unable to provide the Sheriff’s Department with all the necessary equipment that is needed to ensure our technology is up to date.  Consequently, the Sheriff’s Department has been unable to replace obsolete body-worn camera systems which hinders our ability to police at our full capability.

Given the number of sworn officers in the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Department, the Nicholas County Commission has made every effort to provide the equipment that is necessary to perform the duty of a Deputy Sheriff, but some equipment has been overlooked, due to cost.  As mentioned above, this equipment includes body-worn camera systems.  Uniquely, our current system has been replaced with new technology, making our system obsolete.  As a result, the Sheriff’s Department has no body-worn cameras for officers.  Even more, with the current systems being obsolete, it creates substantial risk to both officers and citizens of Nicholas County.

With (20) twenty new body-worn camera systems, the officers will have dependable audio and video evidence which will aid in the prosecution of cases.  Without video and audio evidence, problems occur when not only prosecuting a case but also when proving someone’s innocence.  Likewise, in the event of officer misconduct, these cameras will safeguard the truth which protects both the officers and citizen.
