Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $500,000)

The Chesapeake Police Department is requesting an encapsulated marine vessel capable of transiting in rough, open seas, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay. The requested vessel needs to contain updated technology and safety measures rated for law enforcement purposes and will be a 29-31’ aluminum hull vessel. The service area goes above and beyond the population of Chesapeake, VA as the City of Chesapeake contains the Intercoastal Waterway within its boundaries that transits from Florida to Maine. Chesapeake Maritime Operations routinely enforce boating laws and conduct drug interdiction on the waterway in conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard. The Chesapeake Police Marine Patrol and Underwater Search and Recovery Team are utilized by other cities and counties within the Commonwealth that do not have the resources to respond to waterway emergencies, recoveries, and search and rescue. Chesapeake Maritime Operations have been requested to conduct marine rescues, diving operations, and enforcement utilizing our resources. This vessel would help support millions of citizens, military assets, and Port of Virginia operations.
