Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $65,000)

The Farmington Hills Police Department is the area leader in training and standards. To maintain these standards, we are requesting funding (Byrne Justice Grants) for training in Emergency Vehicle Operations, specifically with safely ending pursuits of vehicles that pose an imminent danger to the public. The purposed training requested will provide Farmington Hills officers with the guidelines and reporting requirements related to the use of the Pursuit Intervention Technique.  Pursuits are inherently dangerous and can place both law enforcement officers and the community at risk.  The Pursuit Intervention Technique is a tool available to law enforcement to safely bring a potentially dangerous vehicle pursuit to an end.  Training our officers to utilize the Pursuit Intervention Technique when the imminent danger caused by the suspect’s actions and/or blatant disregard for the safety of motorists and pedestrians outweighs the potential risk of employing the technique.
