Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $155,000)

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office has been searching for a funding source to purchase a Tek84 Intercept Whole Body Scanning Security System to improve jail security.  The installation of the scanner would enhance security and safety of the jail, jail staff and residents. The scanner can detect both metallic and nonmetallic items such as contraband and narcotics. A picture of the scanner is also attached.  Another photo is attached from an actual detection upon routine scanning during booking.  This scanner offers a small footprint which is beneficial for our limited space.

Lafayette County is situated in the Southwestern part of Wisconsin with an area of 643 square miles or 411,520 acres, it has a population of 17,134. Lafayette County is one of the leading agricultural counties in the state.  It is due to this low population, rural setting, and being situated on the Illinois border and miles from the Iowa border that we are impacted by increased drug traffic on our highways as offenders travel through our county from the larger cities of Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa.  There has been a noticeable increase in Opioid and other illegal substance presence within our population as well as on our highways.
